One of my main job responsibilities is creating emails to send to UT students. One criticism I hear from students is being sent too many emails from the university. I have tried to find ways to cut down the amount students receive even though emails are still our official means of communication.
One way is by working with groups to include their information in the official student newsletter. We send the newsletter, Vol Update, twice a week to all current undergraduate and graduate students. The newsletter provides a way for us to share news, event reminders, deadlines, and involvement opportunities in one spot.
When I first started sending Vol Update in fall 2013, the open rate was around 11 percent. That percentage is now at 52 percent. This year’s seniors are the first class who received Vol Update their freshman year. My hope is that next year I can raise the open rate to 60 percent.
Have you heard from students who say they receive too many emails? If so, what things are you doing to cut down on them?
